In these talks, geology, archaeology and history will combine to tell the story of Illinois' beginnings. The land shaped by plate tectonics and Ice Age glaciers became the home of Paleo-Indian hunters, Mississippian mound builders, and historic tribes like the Illiniwek. In 1673, written history began, portraying French explorers like Marquette, Joliet, and La Salle, with their outposts from Starved Rock to Kaskaskia. After 1765, British rule replaced French -- until British control was shattered by George Rogers Clark in 1778. This is the background of today's Illinois.
